The Devs managed to keep up their impressive start to the season when they visited Eynesbury United on Saturday, taking all 3 points in a 5-2 victory.
We started the game strong, seeing a lot of the ball especially in the middle of the park but didn't really create anything clear cut until the 12th minute, when the debuting Kalonga beat his man at the front post to head home an exceptional cross and give us a well deserved lead.
The lead didn't last long unfortunately, as just 7 minutes later Eynesbury launched a good counter attack after we lost possession in the middle of the park and their winger went round Captain Burberry in goal and rolled it into the empty net to level things.
The Eynesbury goal did knock us for a little while, and the hosts started to see a lot more of the ball and came close from a corner when their CB headed just wide. However we weather the storm well, and around the 25 minute mark started to come back into the game and was rewarded on the 30th minute when Kenny got the last touch of a goal mouth scramble and put the ball in the back of the net to put us back in the lead.
We stayed in control for the remainder of the half until the 43rd minute, when the referee awarded a penalty to Eynesbury after he had decided Armstrong had handled inside the box. Slight bit of confusion as the Linesman nearest to the incident actually informed the Referee it had struck Armstrongs chest, however the penalty was awarded anyway. Thankfully for us, Burberry pulled off an excellent save from the penalty and was quick to react to smother out the rebound and keep us in the lead going into half time.
We started a bit slower in the second half, and was punished for this in the 55th minute when the hosts once again caught us on a counter and the forward kept his composure to slot home and make things 2-2. Fortunately for us, this seemed to be the event that kicked us back into life.
Just 5 minutes after conceding Kenny got his second of the day to put us back in the lead when he finished off a great Leighton move by cutting in from the left and rifling into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
Just 4 minutes later we scored again, this time Kalonga getting his second off the day when he was slipped through one on one. A great touch to knock it past the keeper and then a real calm finish to roll it into the centre of the open goal and putting us in a real commanding position.
After this we made a few subs around the 65th and 75th minute which saw Hatton, Silvestri and Kalonga come off to be replaced by Jaggard, McGlinchey and Theakston. A special mention for the debuting Kalonga getting 2 goals and putting in a real impressive performance up top.
We controlled the last minutes of the game, managing to discourage any Eynesbury thoughts of a comeback with a organised and tidy display. We thought we had put the game to bed in the 85th when Cross burst from the midfield but unfortunately his shot rattled off the post. A goal for Cross would of been the least he deserved after an exceptional performance in the middle of the park.
Finally in the 89th we got our 5th and it was a hat trick for Kenny. Jaggard broke brilliantly from his own half, showing electric pace and he unselfishly rolled it across to Kenny who couldn't miss. Great moment for him, as he gets his first hat trick in senior football.
The full-time whistle went not long after that, and i think its save to say we deserved the win. A few sloppy moments punished by a good Eynesbury side, but we definitely controlled large portions of the game and was very clinical in front of goal. Thank you to Eynesbury who were exceptional hosts. Best of luck for the season and see you at Bell Close later down the line.
As always thanks to everyone's support, we really do appreciate it. We go again next week, so see you all then!
