Leighton progress to the next round of the FA Trophy

A well deserved win for Town in an exciting game last Saturday in sunny Surrey.

Playing on the latest 4 G pitch the Visitors adapted quickly to the excellent surface and took the game to Carshalton right from the start. They were rewarded in the 7th minute when an excellent cross from the right by Kerran Birch was deflected into his own net by Bobby Price. Leighton's Alex Woodfine had a long range effort saved before the host's Greg Andrews excellent shot was superbly tipped over the bar by Town keeper Sam Mazurek. On 34 minutes a lovely pass let Craig Maisiri beat the offside trap and he just beat the goalkeeper and cooly stroked Town's second. Maisiri had another effort well saved just before the half-time break.

Town should have secured the game early in the second period when a fabulous three man move involving Gallant and Maisiri put Woodfine clean through but his effort just went wide of the post with the home keeper stranded.

Carshalton then had a good period of possession but Town's defence led by Hatch and Jenkins was solid and Mazurek was not really troubled in goal. Price should have done better for the hosts but missed when clear. At the other end home keeper Colquhoun saved well at the feet of Woodfine.

Carshalton then pressed very hard for a goal and a superb overhead kick from sub Aikhionbare crashed off the bar before another effort was cleared off Leighton's goal line. A free kick from Marshall just clipped the bar as Carshalton pressed.

Town withstood this pressure and calmly played out time to record an excellent win.

They are away now to Enfield Town on 31st October in the next round.

Manager Mark Eaton was very pleased with this confident performance and will look to take this form into League matches. It would be unfair to single out any one from the squad as this was a very competent all round team performance.

Next Saturday Town are away at St Ives in the League and a week on Tuesday they entertain Arlesey Town at Bell Close in the Red Insure League Cup.
