Match Report

Leighton Town 0-1 Egham Town

Saturday’s game against Egham Town was somewhat marred by the extremely windy conditions at Bell Close and both sides struggled to get a foothold in the game.

Leighton tried to get a foothold in the game early with half chances from Jemale McKenzie-Lowe and James Hatch and the first real shot of the game came from McKenzie-Lowe who tried a longshot that didn’t really challenge Egham goalkeeper Jamie Norris as it sailed over the bar.

Leighton’s one-touch passing looked very good at times but today was not the game for the neutral fan, debutant Joe Nyama had Leighton’s next shot on goal but again it was a long-ranged effort that was taken wide by the wind.

Like Leighton, Egham were finding chances few and far between and would have found themselves through on goal if it weren’t for a very good sliding tackle by Jordan Jenkins.

Longshots were all either side could muster so far in this first half, Mckenzie-Lowe had another effort for Leighton that went wide and an Egham cross/shot on the left side didn’t really trouble Brad Kirkwood.

Both sides looked like they could counter attack with pace and Egham had a good opportunity to get the game’s first goal when Rajram Pashaj made a good run on the far side and pulled it back for Callum Webb who was off balance when his shot went well wide.

Neither goalkeeper had had a save to make so far but the best chance of the game came after a Leighton corner reached Ibrahim Kallon who’s shot was blocked by an Egham defender.

However James Hatch went one better a few minutes later nearly scoring for Leighton after a good long ball reached him, but his toe poke was deflected inches wide.

The mood of the first half was summed up when Egham keeper Norris walked his ball in his box for 2 minutes or so before the half-time whistle blew with no Leighton player trying to challenge him and by half-time you felt one goal would be all that was needed to settle the tie.

The second half began and both teams were still huffing and puffing and Egham were struggling to break Leighton down through superb defending from James Towell and Jenkins.

Set-pieces seemed like a way for Egham and Leighton to create scoring opportunities and after an Egham free-kick Chris Henry shot straight at Kirkwood which was one of the only saves Kirkwood had to make all game.

Leighton were similarly trying to make their set-pieces count and after a free-kick, Leighton substitute Curtis Shaw received the ball in the box and he turned and shot but it was straight at Norris.

Then straight from this shot the pivotal moment of the game came, Egham turned over possession quickly and found themselves through on goal and after the wind wrong footed the defence substitute Henry was there to coolly slot home to give the Sarnies the decisive goal of the game in the 88th minute.

The visitors nearly had a chance to make it two after Henry found himself in on goal, he tried to square it to Pashaj, but Kirkwood was there like a shot to claim it.

That was the last chance of the game and like on many occasions this season, Leighton simply didn’t deserve to lose. The windy conditions were a hindrance to both sides and neither side really deserved to win and the game seemed destined for a draw with the lack of chances. The positive for Town is that they have two away games in quick succession to get this defeat out of their system, firstly away to Ware this Tuesday and then away to Kings Langley on Saturday.
