Godalming Town 2 - Leighton Town 2

Match Report

Godalming Town 2 Leighton Town 2 .

A well earned and thoroughly deserved point for Leighton at a very blustery Godalming last Saturday.

Leighton started well and took the lead on 14 minutes when following a free kick which was not cleared by the Godalming defence, the ball fell to Dave Brown who carefully placed it under 'keeper Ossi from close in. Good defending by Jenkins and Hazet at the heart of the Visitor's defence restricted Godalming to a couple of half chances which were not taken and when they did make progress Bradley Kirkwood in the Town goal made a good save to deny an equaliser.

Alex O'Brien brought two good saves from Ossai as Leighton pressed at the end of the first period.

Both sides started the second half well and chances were created at both ends. A Godalming free kick went just over the bar and Ben Gallant went close at the other end. Sub Mesembe missed a great opportunity for the Hosts and Kirkwood saved bravely at the feet of Bassett as Godalming had a good spell of possession. Godalming should have scored when a great cross from the right was missed by their forwards but the equaliser came on 75 minutes when a deflected shot hit the post and the rebound fell to Bassett who scored from inside the 6 yard box.

Leighton worked hard and pressed forward looking to take the game to the hosts but a long clearance found Bassett on the left - who looked at least 5 yards off-side - and he ran through un-challenged and gave Kirkwood no chance to give Godalming the lead.

Town responded and Hatch almost scored with a great header from a corner. Leighton pushed everyone forward as they searched for the equaliser and they were rewarded at the very end when 'keeper Ossai failed to hold an O'Brien free-kick and the alert Hatch was on hand to level the scores.

Another very encouraging performance for Manager Murray - all who played were excellent - no stars - a great all round team performance.
