Leighton Score Late Goal to Take 3 Points

Leighton Manager, Mark Eaton must be delighted with the start that his young side have made in this season’s League games. The Manager’s plans were disrupted before the game due to the late arrival of the team’s kit and Nathan Olukanmi was also delayed by extremely heavy traffic which meant he had to start on the subs bench with David Brown taking his place on the right side of midfield. James Hatch returned to the side in midfield as captain with Ben Gallant joining Samson Alalade in a two man attack.

Both side took a while to settle but Town created the first opportunity when Ben Gallant won a tackle just outside the Egham penalty area, the ball rolled loose but Alalade quickly touched it back to Gallant and his shot was only a couple of inches too high. Town did not have to wait too long however to get the opening goal as in the 10th minute Gallant broke through on the left and sent a low ball across the face of the Egham goal where it fell to David Brown who drove the ball back shot across goal into the far side of the net. In the 19th minute the hosts nearly drew level when Hippolyte shot across goal but his effort hit the post before Town cleared the ball for corner kick. From the resulting corner Gutteridge was allowed a free header but his effort went well wide of the post.Egham were pushing forward and in the 25th minute Mathew drew a fine save from Bufton in the Leighton goal. Town looked dangerous in the 31st minute when Westlake drove in a low cross but Norris, the Egham keeper got a hand to the ball and diverted it away from two Leighton players who were handily placed. In the 36th minute Craig Maisiri ran onto a through ball and got there just before the keeper who clattered into the Town striker, Town players and fans appealed for the penalty but the Referee decided felt that the challenge was legal and Ben Gallant was penalised when he picked up the loose ball.

Early in the second half Leighton won a corner and when the ball was headed away Jordan Jenkins shot from 18 yards but his effort was off target. A minute after this Leighton were lucky when an Egham forward ran through their defence but his hot hit the inside of the post before bouncing clear. In the 57th minute a cross from the right was headed towards goal by Ben Gallant but unfortunately for the Town striker it was a just too high. A few minutes after this Aaron Bufton had to produce a good block save to deny the home side a clear chance. Then two minutes later the hosts drove the ball across the face of goal but none of their strikers was close to getting a touch. Town introduced Olukanmi to replace Westwood in the 72nd minute with Gallant dropping back into midfield. Egham drew level in the78th minute when full back Gondwe ran at the Leighton defence and then surprised everyone by shooting and his effort found its way past Bufton. It was looking likely that the sides would share the points but Egham had a good chance in the 86 minute when a low ball was driven across but one of their strikers from close range put it over the bar under pressure from a Town defender. Two minutes after this Bufton once again was required to make a fine save to keep Town level. With the clock ticking away Town launched a final attack and when the ball fell to Jack Smith on the left he got clear of his marker and his chipped cross from a sharp angle went over the keeper and settled in the far side of the net to put Leighton back in front.
Home fans will claim that Egham deserved a point for their efforts but goals win games and Town will be well pleased with their afternoon’s work despite the early disruption. A good all round performance by Leighton who can now look forward with confidence to a difficult match on Tuesday night’s game against St .Ives at Bell Close.
