Nine wins on the bounce: Shefford 1-4 Leighton Town

Andrew Parker31 Mar 2023 - 20:16

Leighton Town kept up an imperious run of form on Thursday night with another confident win as they cut through the back log of games in hand in the Spartan.

With eyes fixed firmly to the top of the table, Leighton took no time to get proceedings under way at Shefford Sports Club. James Towell was on the end of a Leon Lobjoit header across the face from an early corner - giving the visitors the lead four minutes in from close range.
Corners looked to be a first half weapon of choice, and Harry Seabrook nearly doubled Town’s lead before the half hour mark. Kyle Connolly floated the set piece in from the right perfectly, yet the defender’s towering header was just wide of the right post.
Again, set pieces were a threat as Luke Pyman got a flick on straight at the keeper on 35’, yet that illusive second goal would come for Town just before the break. Shefford were ultimately caught lacking at the back and Leon Lobjoit latched onto the dropping ball, strode into the box calmly and slotted into the bottom right for a ridiculous 49th goal of the season in all competitions.
In the second half, there were rumblings around the away support of a landmark 50th goal – yet unfortunately for Lobjoit it cruelly wasn’t to be. On 62’, a testing drive from Luke Pyman had the keeper parrying. Lobjoit’s headed rebound was chalked off for offside in the build-up.
Relatively against the run of play and right after this, Shefford did manage to get a goal back. The home side’s prolific Sam King found himself in behind and finished well to make it 1-2.
Seemingly unfazed, Leighton were back on the scoresheet on 68 minutes. Jake Tabor ran on to a nice inside ball from the left before leaving Shefford’s number one rooted to the spot as he picked out the bottom right corner in superb fashion.
At 1-3, Leighton had their insurance goal in the final 20 minutes. That said, there was a want for more. That fourth goal would come on 80’ again as Lobjoit was denied his 50th of the term. The striker seemingly slid the ball past the onrushing keeper, yet like a true poacher Archie McClelland was on hand to help it on its way for his 20th of the season.
So, for Lobjoit the wait goes on for goal number 50 – yet he’ll have the chance on Saturday as Town’s next game is away at Baldock at Arlesey’s New Lamb Meadow.

LTFC XI: Comas; Folarin, Connolly, Seabrook, Jackson, Pyman, Towell, Spaul (C), Toomey, Lobjoit, Tabor.
Subs: McClelland, Connolly, Beck, Marsh-Brown, Flanagan.
