Trophy Celebrations: Leighton Town 4-0 Arlesey

Andrew Parker19 Apr 2023 - 18:35

Leighton Town were finally awarded the SSMFL trophy on Tuesday night as a joyous Bell Close laid witness to visitors Arlesey

getting picked apart by the champions.

It was a dominant display for the strikers as both Leon Lobjoit and his substitute replacement Lewis Toomey bagged braces in front of the 323 in attendance.

With Saturday’s loss firmly in the rear view, Town were back to playing like champions as just six minutes in, Leon Lobjoit opened the scoring. Kyle Connolly executed a great jinking run and his pass found Lobjoit on the right side who found the bottom left with ease. That was his 57th of the season.

On 25’, it was 58. In a similar spot to his first of the game, Lobjoit drove low. It cannoned off the right post and hit the diving keeper. Perhaps an own goal? At 2-0 Town were hardly bothered.

What was a bother, was Lobjoit withdrawing through injury. He made way for Lewis Toomey on 36’ to put a damper on a top first half display. Little did he imagine, his replacement’s impressive inbound half of football.

In the second period, Toomey took no time to get acquainted. On 57’ he was booked. On 60’ he scored. The replacement was found on the left of the box and finished hard and low excellently into the bottom right for 3-0.

As a new group of fans rocked the shed end, on the pitch - it wouldn’t be long before Leighton would be jumping for joy again. On 79 minutes Toomey had his second goal. A great ball from the left was whipped low from Archie McClelland. Toomey prodded home at the near post to cap a top performance.

One honourable mention must go to Kevin Marsh emerging off the bench to resounding applause for Xavi Comas in the final ten. Yet, the true icing on the cake was of course the trophy lift at full time.

Town celebrated in front of the clubhouse where continual support this season has been brilliant. Now, it’s back on the road on Thursday as it’s 1st vs 2nd when Town travel to Stotfold.

LTFC XI: Comas; Connolly (C), Connolly, Folarin, Jackson, Pyman, Towell, Spaul, Lobjoit, Robins.

Subs: Toomey, Marsh, Marsh-Brown, Amu, Flanagan.
