as the side hope to get their hands on the SSMFL title this week.
Whilst great goals from Leon Lobjoit kept the away fans in high spirits, attention admittedly strayed to second placed Stotfold and their result – for dropped points against Shefford would’ve sealed the title.
Regardless of scores elsewhere, the players of course had to focus on the matter at hand – even if that was getting past Ardley keeper Ben Hoy who showed excellent form on 25 minutes to deny an opener. Leon Lobjoit was played in on the right of the box and fired goal bound – Hoy was agile to tip on to the right post and leave the travelling support in awe.
Unfortunately for Hoy and Ardley though, that awe would quickly turn to jubilation in just five minutes as Lobjoit would get his goal on the half hour mark. Jake Tabor whipped in a delightful corner from the left and the prolific forward just got on the end of it to claim his 54th of the campaign.
It wouldn’t take long for 55th to arrive either, as Leighton were awarded a penalty on 35’. It looked close, but Luke Pyman got scythed down in the area. Lobjoit was cool from the spot to find the bottom left corner to give the visitors a comfortable cushion before the break.
As the first half brought goals, the second brought cards as the game opened with a very scrappy spell. It seemed card after card at one point as Jackson, then Tabor entered the referee’s book before five minutes had even been played.
After playing with disciplinary fire, Town fought hard with a determined Ardley who never seemed to pull out from a challenge. Heading into the final ten, they’d assert that effort into the Leighton goal and snatch one back on 84’. Lewis Gabbidon was the man to get it – flicking his header smartly past Xavi Comas following an accurate ball from the right side.
Ultimately though, Comas and Town would get the last laugh – especially as the Spaniard more than made up for conceding with a superb save just minutes from the end. A corner from the left was met with a looping header. Comas was equal to it, tipping brilliantly on to the crossbar to secure the three points.
Now, as Stotfold triumphed 3-1 against Shefford, Leighton have to persevere. The title challenge continues on Thursday with the trip to Biggleswade United where a point could wrap things up for Lee Bircham’s men.
