Tring Athletic 0-1 Leighton Town: Late McClelland strike clinches vital win

Archie McClelland’s late goal was enough to settle the difference as Leighton now focus on the midweek’s Gladwish Trophy semi-final against Dunstable Town.
Admittedly, the game at the Grassroots Stadium was a slow burner at first. The only real chance of the first half came for Town through new man Harry Seabrook. His wayward header on seven minutes was about all the visitors could offer.
Town were much brighter after the break and could have even had a penalty. Ronan Hutchins’ mazey run was ended as he looked to be tripped. However, the ref was unmoved. Several minutes later, Tring goalkeeper Oscar Frost made an unorthodox stop. The long range shot from midfield bounced just before the stopper and it hit his shoulder, luckily for him just going wide.
As the minutes ticked by, it seemed set to be a draw. However, approaching the final ten minutes, Archie McClelland had other ideas. Whilst Toomey and Lobjoit weren’t playing, McClelland stepped up to convert the winner on 85 minutes. He was sublime in latching on to the ball over the top before rounding the goalkeeper and squeezing the ball home on a tight angle.
As said, after this dramatic game, Town’s next challenge is of the Gladwish Challenge Trophy variety as Dunstable Town pay a visit to Bell Close on Tuesday night. This game is the semi-final and is set to be a cracker.
