There were six goal scorers in this one as Town resume their pursuit of table topping Stotfold with a game in hand.
The men in purple were dominant from the start and James Towell opened the scoring 13 minutes in. Kyle Connolly lofted in a precise deep cross and Towell was there at the back post to head past goalkeeper Liam Nugent. For the second goal, Connolly went from provider to scorer just before the half hour mark. The wing back cut in following a surging run on the right and fired a brilliant, low drive back across goal. Clipping the base of the post, it was the definition of unsavable.
Before the first 45 was up, Archie McClelland made it three for the visitors. Leon Lobjoit set his strike partner up well with a skilful backheel but nothing should be taken away from the smart finish that found the bottom right corner.
With both sides back out after the break, McClelland didn’t take too long to continue the scoring. He was in for his second on 63’ with a superb goal. First he latched on to Leon Lobjoit’s flick. Then, he had the Hoddesdon defence bumbling before finding his feet and picking out the bottom left in pin point fashion.
Travelling Town weren’t done with four goals, and a late flurry embodied a cold-blooded attacking ethos that’s been bubbling under the surface of late. After being involved in previous attacks, Lobjoit got on the score sheet on 76’, artfully nodding in a Reece Robins cross. Just a mere minute later, Town won a penalty as a tired Harry Norman was deemed to handle the ball on the line. Substitute Lewis Toomey confidently made it six from the spot.
It the last ten minutes it was the Will Summerfield show. His free kick blazing into the top right corner on 79’ was the poster child for an away day done properly. His second free kick goal, (yes second!) was the cherry on top as Leighton travelled back to Bedfordshire eight goals to the good. After this excellent display, focus now shifts to midweek Dudley Latham Cup action against Shefford before an exciting FA Vase clash against holders Newport Pagnell on Saturday.
