Leighton Town began October by moving third in the table with a dominant 5-1 victory against Biggleswade United. This week’s win saw the continued themes of goals with four scorers, and top attendance with 403 spectators.
After a quiet first ten minutes, Town jumped into life with Robbie Goodman’s opener. On 16’, Kyle Connolly put in a trademark corner and Goodman got on to the loose ball and smashed home. Six minutes later, the hosts had a penalty decision waved away but nearly made up for it when Kyle Connolly throttled the crossbar on the half hour mark.
Biggleswade made Leighton rue missed chances, levelling on 37’. Taylor Rhiney produced a great effort from the edge of the box, arrowing into the bottom left corner past Xavi Comas. Despite this bolt from the blue, Town kept up the attacking impetus and won a penalty through Leon Lobjoit on 42 minutes. Lewis Toomey offered a cool head from 12 yards and restored the lead, sealing his 12th goal of the season in the process.
It would be lucky 13 for Leighton’s third goal just moments later, as Toomey capped a solid first half showing. He rounded the travelling keeper excellently and slotted home as Town moved into a comfortable lead.
After the break, it was business as usual as Lobjoit added to the tally just ten minutes in. Connolly crossed in low and the striker fired in comfortably to make it 4-1. Kieran Turner was the last player on the scoresheet on 67’. Connolly continued as provider and put a sumptuous ball on a plate for Turner to head in excellently.
This win marked yet another top day at Bell Close and now Lee Bircham’s side prepare for Tuesday’s trip to Baldock in the Dudley Latham Memorial Cup.
