Match Report v Baldock Town

Andrew Parker14 Sep 2022 - 18:09

Tuesday night saw the football resume after a weekend of national mourning. With it came an emphatic return to league action for Leighton Town as they prevailed 3-1 in a commanding performance against Baldock

In what was the fourth consecutive win in the league, Town capped a so far undefeated start to this league campaign with goals from the prolific Leon Lobjoit, Archie McClelland and Kyle Connolly. Baldock’s late consolation came from Tommy Reynolds.
As is becoming typical of late, Leighton started strong and after a solid tester from Robbie Goodman 11 minutes in, Leon Lobjoit opened the scoring on 15’. It was a tried and tested formula. Kyle Connolly whizzed in an excellent cross and after a great first touch, Lobjoit pelted it in from close range. It emphatically smacked the underside of the bar on its way.
After the goal, Town were widely on top. Both Kieran Turner and Archie McClelland went close to doubling the score on the half hour mark before Baldock keeper David Archer was forced into two excellent saves to keep the score to 1-0 before half time. His first save came as Ben Spaul nearly picked out the bottom left from range on 31’. His next save was even better – stopping a thunderous effort at his near right post.
In the second half, the hosts didn’t let up and just five minutes in, a second goal arrived. This time, usual goal scorer Lobjoit turned provider and put in a great searching cross from the left. Archie McClelland was at the back post to finish low through Archer.
After a quiet spell where Baldock looked to battle well, the game sparked into life again approaching the final ten minutes. On 79’, Kyle Connolly was on hand to mop up after Lobjoit slammed one low. The keeper could only parry and the defender tapped home. Then, as the clean sheet looked all but secure, Baldock got a consolation goal on 90’. It was Tommy Reynolds who got to the front post first, beating all in red well to head in.
This strong showing in the rain under the lights finished 3-1 and now focus shifts to Saturday’s challenge away at ST Panteleimon in the league.
