Leighton Town continued the league campaign in Aylesbury in good form on Tuesday night. Playing at a busy Greenfleets, Lee Bircham’s side led throughout but the hosts pushed them to the final whistle. Goals came from Leon Lobjoit and Lewis Toomey, the latter bagging a crucial insurance goal to see off any potential comeback.
On yet another away trip, Leighton had to deal with a negative early on as Ethan Flanagan went down just after ten minutes. Rumoured to have twinged his hamstring, an early change was in order and James Towell took his place.
After this, Town seemed hardly deterred and opened the scoring through typical fashion. Leon Lobjoit continued some great early season form and showed top composure to round Dynamos’ keeper George Zammit to slot home on 15’. Following the goal, a tense battle ensued. Tackles were rife, as home defender Jake Hodgins showed, stopping a number of runs in behind from Lobjoit and co. Xavi Comas was tested as Aylesbury often countered. On 26’ came perhaps the hosts best chance to get back into the game. A shot from the left had the Spaniard diving at full stretch before he again denied the follow up.
The second half saw the fast pace continue. Leighton scored again just after the hour mark. A deflected free kick from the right caused havoc for Zammit in the Dynamos’ goal and Lobjoit was present at the back post to grab his second of the evening.
Dynamos, to their credit, persevered despite conceding again and pulled one back on 78’. Jack Hodgins slammed a header past Comas, finding the top right to raise the tempo in the last ten minutes. The Greenfleets residents were definitely not backing down, yet perhaps got carried away throwing bodies forward as a Leighton counter undid their comeback efforts.
On 90’, early substitute James Towell showed great energy down the right wing and picked out Lewis Toomey at the near post. He hit his effort back across and adeptly found the bottom left corner to put the result beyond doubt.
Against a tough Aylesbury outfit, a 1-3 score line looks to provide a solid boost before Town take the trip to East London on Saturday to play Barking in the next round of the FA Cup.
