In this final taking place at Leverstock Green’s Pancake Lane ground, Leighton showed early signs of intent. On just ten minutes, danger man Leon Lobjoit burst down the left. However, his shot was just wide and smashed into the left side netting.
After this, Town kept up the pressure and Lobjoit eventually hit the brilliant 60th goal landmark for the season in all competitions. Converting on 27 minutes, his goal saw him come in again from the left side and locking on to the ball mid-air; providing a cultured volleyed prod past keeper Ben Hoy.
This goal was the last real action of the first period, yet it didn’t take Leighton to double the lead in the second half. Lewis Toomey was the man to get it, running to a ball slid low from the right. It was perfectly on a plate for the striker, who powered the ball into the bottom left confidently on 59’.
Confidence should’ve been the watch word at this point. Yet, this was dampened slightly when Ardley fought back with a determined goal of their own through Declan Benjamin. Following this, the game entered a scrappy spell as United realised they could get something from this game.
A string of cards saw Manny Folarin, Jake Tabor and Ardley’s number three go in the book – before in a more hot-headed turn of events, Ardley’s number 11 received his marching orders on 79 minutes.
Leighton looked to capitalise on their newfound advantage and added a late insurance goal deep in the lengthy 11 minutes added on. Completing a great day for the offensive trio, Archie McClelland got on the scoresheet. Substitute Reece Robins provided the goods with a quality cross from the left and McClelland tapped home – wheeling away like a prime Alan Shearer.
This last action had photographer Simon packing up his camera gear behind the goal and Town firmly had two hands on the cup – cementing this season as a great chapter in the Leighton Town history books.
