A hard thought 90 minutes that ended 2-2, spot kicks were the only way to separate the two sides at the Fernie Fields Sports Ground.
The visiting Town really grabbed this one by the scruff of the neck. Lewis Toomey hit the bar just four minutes in before Leon Lobjoit slid in the opener with 15’ gone. Ronan Hutchins won the ball in the midfield and aptly played his striker in, who despite a tight angle on the left, nutmegged the keeper at his near post.
Leighton had more opportunities with Kwai Marsh-Brown and that man Lobjoit coming close again, yet it was the SSML Division One side who struck next with an equaliser on the 42nd minute.
After the break, and on 66 minutes, Leighton had a penalty shout waved away. Then, with more pressure on the Sileby goal, the Rangers’ number one made an excellent stop with his feet to keep it level.
Town kept push and eventually a goal came. Substitute Josh Hatton made an instant impact after his arrival. His sublime cross from the right was on the money for the head of Toomey who looked to have won it for the men in purple.
Sileby though, weren’t beat yet, and provided a veritable rocket from 30 yards to send this one straight to the spot. As close a battle as had been played out in normal time, the penalties went all the way to a 6-7 score. Who scored the winner? That catalyst Josh Hatton.
Rightfully, he also grabbed the man of the match as Town now turn their attentions to Saturday’s trip to Tring Athletic in the league.
