New Lamb Meadow saw cup action on Tuesday night as Leighton Town scraped past Baldock 1-2 in the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division Cup.
The hosts, who Town had previously battered in recent times, looked vastly improved and opened the scoring on 22 minutes. The defence was at sixes and sevens as Leighton missed the first ball from a corner and it found the back of the net.
Recovering from the initial shock, Lee Bircham’s team settled and responded through Lewis Toomey on 37’. Superb build up play on the left from Archie McClelland and Gary Connolly culminated in a top ball from the latter. Toomey trapped it and slotted in from very close range.
After the break, this midweek fixture looked to have fallen flat. Both sides employed industrial hoofball tactics yet ultimately, the visitors would keep applying pressure and were rewarded with a penalty. Leon Lobjoit was clattered in the air by the Baldock keeper on 73’. Toomey was typically non-plussed from the spot on 74’ and cemented his Man of The Match display by firing high into the right side.
Despite being under the cosh for large spells of the final 15 minutes, a resolute Leighton Town survived and now progress to the next round. After this one, its back to league action – away at Dunstable Town on Saturday.
