Leighton Town kicked off their Gladwish Challenge Trophy campaign with a dominant win on Tuesday night. Beating SSML Division Two opponents Codicote comfortably, goals came from Robbie Goodman, Leon Lobjoit, Lewis Toomey and Archie McClelland.
Before the game began, this fixture at Bell Close saw the hosts the favourites and Town started strongly. Just two minutes into the game, Robbie Goodman dispatched a corner from the right well – rising high to nod home. The early momentum continued after this, as Lewis Toomey got his first of the day just a minute later. Lobjoit had a shot saved by the keeper and Toomey was lurking to tap in easily.
On 11’, the goal scoring continued as Kieran Turner on the right provided some excellent wing play before finding Lobjoit at the back stick as he headed in. Before the half was out, Leighton would have another and it was Lewis Toomey blasting across goal to find the top left from just inside the box.
After half time, Town continued pushing for more and won a penalty just three minutes into the new period. Toomey stepped up and calmly slotted it away to get his hands on the match ball. On 52’, Lobjoit had the ball in the net following a top save from the Codicote keeper. Alas, he was just adjudged offside.
Celebrations would resume however on 61’ as Lobjoit was on hand again to head in following a deflected McClelland cross. The latter would get on the scoresheet himself just three minutes later – finishing well after a mazey dribble across the box from the left.
Town saw out the rest of the game coolly and now look to Baldock, who they welcome to Bell Close on Saturday in the Premier Division Cup.
