Bovingdon hold out against persistent Town as second preseason friendly ends goalless
Leighton Town were unable to continue their blistering start to preseason against Bovingdon, as they were held to a goalless draw at Green Lane.
Lee Bircham’s squad started with a similar ferocity witnessed at Bedford and even had the ball in the net early on. Though, however smart Lewis Toomey’s lob was, he couldn’t evade the offside trap six minutes in. Two minutes later, he surged into the box once more but dragged his shot wide.
Much in the ascendency, Town continued to knock on the door in the first half. Most notably, chances came for Leon Lobjoit and Gary Connolly. On ’15, the former Northampton man forced a good low save from keeper Ben Humphrey, before hitting the post with a header on ’23. Connolly almost scored with an excellent effort – employing a Cruyff turn to beat his man on the cut back before narrowly curling wide from range.
Before the half time whistle, Bovingdon would create opportunities themselves. Aside from half chances via set-pieces, the home side came close with a top strike from Billy Hoar. A sweet struck volley with his right, it forced some fine acrobatics from Xavi Comas – who was agile enough to tip it wide.
After the 15-minute breather, both sides continued searching for the goal to break the deadlock. Top wing play from Jordan Brown and good distribution from Kieran Turner had Leighton making strides numerous times down the left, and as a result efforts came from Lobjoit, Archie McClelland and Joe Fitzgerald. The latter forced a great save on ’70 as a long-range drive just didn’t curl away invitingly enough.
On 80’ Turner had a free kick tipped over well and Bovingdon really hunkered down for the draw. Perhaps the 84th minute summed up the day as a defender in green blocked Frankie Bircham’s side-foot superbly off the line. The goals just weren’t to come seemingly.
The action ended rightfully level, as both sides couldn’t take advantage of some good chances. Now, attention turns to Saturday and a big challenge at home against Southern League opposition Hayes and Yeading.
