Town Lose At Oxhey Jets

Andrew Parker11 Oct 2021 - 17:39

After their defeat at Harefield in midweek Town knew that nothing less than a win would be acceptable form this game .

Oxhey who have had to rebuild their whole team in recent weeks after dismissing their Manager were second from bottom in the League before the game, but Town had to make some changes with BIll Morgan, Luke Dunstan and Dave Murphy unavailable for selection. Leighton started at a good tempo and in an early attack James Towell raced down the line but his low cross was blocked by a defender. Town kept up the pressure and a Jordon Frederick cross was headed wide by Ashton Campbell from a good position, then Ross Adams struck a shot which the keeper saved . Town were well on top at this stage and in the 13th minute Connor Coulson fired a long kick down the pitch and Ashton Campbell who had run behind the defence had to wait for the ball to drop but a defender managed to get back and clear at the expense of a corner kick. The game had been all Leighton at this point except for one break by the home team. In the 19th minute Oxhey shocked Leighton by taking the lead with a freak goal, Oxhey defender Ferrel Charles from about 45 yards punted a long high ball towards the Leighton goal and it went over keeper, Coulson and into the top corner of the goal. After the shock of going behind Town went back on the attack and Ashton Campbell played a pass through the home defence but the keeper just beat James Towell to the ball. Oxhey then attacked and Inch made space for a shot but Coulson made a comfortable save. James Towell then tried a shot from distance but it went well over the bar.

Town made a change at half time when the injured Newbury-Barr was replaced by Alfie Osborne. Town created 2 early chances at the start of the half but a dfender headed one off the line and Tom Silford shot well over from about 12 yards. About half way through the second half Ashton Campbell fired in a terrific shot which hit the bar and bounced out. Although Town had dominated the half the hosts scored a second following a free kick when Wade headed the ball over Coulson. Leighton went back on the offensive and Tom Bryant struck a shot wide of the post. In the 60th minute from a corner kick Danny Webb forced the ball over the line to give Leighton a glimmer of hope. Town scored an equaliser when Dave Parkinson scored from close range and Town fans they might take all 3 points. Iin the dying minutes Danny Webb got a header in from Campbell's free kick but the keeper turned it around the post From the resulting corner the ball broke loose and the referee awarded a penalty for a tackle from behind on Parkinson. Although a couple of Oxhey players tried to rough up the penalty spot, Danny Webb stepped up to the ball but put is effort wide of the left hand post. Leighton fans would say that the penalty miss just about summed up Leighton's day, who could argue ?

Town play away at Crawley Green next week at Vauxhall's Sports Ground . There is no parking available at the ground but fans can park at the Linden Academy School about 200 yards away in Park Street.
