Leighton were not at their best yesterday and lost out to a good Harpenden Town side who won this top of the table clash by two second half goals. It was, as to be expected, a very competitive game played in a great spirit, and refereed in a very competent manner by Jon Panconi and his Assistants.
The Hosts started the stronger but did not create many chances, the most notable being a free kick from 25 yards which just flashed past the post with the Harpenden‘keeper beaten. Defences dominated and the sides cancelled each other out in midfield.
Town ‘keeper Coulson was the busier after the break as pressure was applied by the Visitors and they looked the more likely to score. However Leighton regained some control and really should have scored but lost composure at the final moments.
Very poor defending cost Leighton the opening goal when a free kick from the right was headed home by the forward who was totally unmarked on the edge of the six yard box.
Leighton had a good spell and some excellent defending, which prevented Harpenden from extending their lead. Leighton should have scored but a couple of chances were missed before some crazy defending by them gifted their opponents a second on the final whistle .
It is back to the drawing board for Town’s Managers before two away games this coming week. Hopefully the two recent signings who missed this game will be available and help improve the midfield which was poor on Saturday.
The game was Sponsored by Energie Fitness of Bridge Street and the Leighton Town Youth U10 Team
were very proud mascots.
