After a very disappointing display at Holmer Green at the weekend Leighton returned to winning ways at Stotfold on Tuesday night with a high tempo performance that gave them control for most of this quarter final.

Dudley Latham Cup Quarter Final

Town opened the scoring after 12 minutes when Tom Guiney headed home from an Alex OBrien free kick. Town were really on the front foot and they deservedly increased their lead after 28 minutes when Dom Marsala drove the ball low across the front of the goal and Lewis McBride knocked it back for James Hatch to fire home from close range.

Stotfold had a couple of threatening attacks but Tom Wyant in his usual manner dealt comfortably with their best efforts.

Town then scored twice in the last two minutes of the half to effectively end this game as a true contest, James Hatch fired home with his left foot and right on the break Dom Marsala drove home after Hatch had an effort saved by the keeper.

Stotfold started the second half in lively style and pulled a goal back with a penalty in the 60th minute after Wyant brought down an attacker in the box.

Town opened the gap between the sides again when sub Tom Silford scored in the 77th minute with a low shot into the corner of the net. Three late goals from McBride and a brace from Hatch ensured that Town finished strongly to reach the semi final against Harpenden.

A good performance by Town and they will be hoping to continue in the same style on Saturday at Gorleston but I have no doubt it will be a much closer game than this one.
