Leighton travelled to Northwood on Saturday looking to start their season with a positive result.

Things started badly for Town Manager, Scott Reynolds when striker, James Hatch had to make a late withdrawal and as a result the Team had several positional changes to contend with.

The first 5 minutes were played at a slow pace with neither side trying to force the pace of the game on a hot afternoon but the hosts had the first shot of the game when Philogene drew a fine save from Tom Wyant in the Town goal after Town gave the ball away in midfield.

Town had a chance after they won a free kick on the left but Hateley Mercer headed well over the bar from Hall's free kick.

Tigers then had three attempts at goal in the next few minutes but they were way off target and never troubled Town's defence.

In the 17th minute Dom Marsala got free down the left and fired in a low cross which was intercepted at the cost of a corner which was immediately followed by a second which the hosts cleared without any problems.

Shortly after this James Towell fired in a fine shot which required Dorzas to make a good save diving to his left.

Tigers then returned to the offensive but Abbasi was way off target with his left footed effort.

James Towell was again involved in a Town attack but his effort from distance went just wide. Towel then beat two opponents on the right flank before delivering a superb cross which was well caught by the home keeper with town looking dangerous.

Then after another Leighton corner Alex Condon headed just wide from a good position when he probably felt he should have scored.

In the last minute of the half Hateley Mercer set Marsala free down the left and the Town skipper passed a low ball across the face of the goal for Lorrel Smith to slide it home and give Leighton the lead.

Town started the second half in positive style and a fierce drive by Kai Ashley looked goalbound until it struck a Tigers defender.

Tigers returned to the attack but Town defended well and Wyant picked up the loose ball to end the threat.

Leighton attacked again and had 3 successive efforts which ended when Dom Marsala headed the ball wide.

In the 62nd minute Lorrel Smith chased a through ball but was just beaten to the ball by the keeper.

Tigers were having plenty of possession at this stage but not really creating any real threat.

Philogene than shot weekly when left in space by a deep cross. Tom Bryant then headed over in Town's next attack.

In the 71st minute Dom Marsala put the ball in the net after a good Town move but the officials gave him offside.

A few minutes later James Towell headed home at the back post but the officials decided he was also offside.

Tigers looked dangerous when they had a two on two situation but Hateley Mercer made a superb tackle to avert the threat.

Tigers however drew level in the 80th minute when theTown defence were caught out by a through pass down the right side of their defence which Ramas fired across Wyant and just inside the far post.

Town looked as if they might have to settle for a point but in the 84th minute Lorrel Smith beat both the keeper and his marker to a through ball, he than knocked it towards the far side of the goal then ran after it to drive it home from close range.

Town nearly scored a third in the 88th minute when the keeper fumbled the ball but he recovered quickly to grab the ball before it could cross the line.

This was a workman like performance where Town never really hit the heights but they were deserved winners on the day.
