Colney Heath 0 - Leighton Town 1

After two successive wins Leighton made the short trip to London Colney on Saturday looking for another 3 points as they tried to ensure their Premier Division status.
Town had to make a couple of changes due to unavailability of players but they still managed to field a strong team with Lorrell Smith returning to attack after missing last Tuesday’s game against Crawley Green.
With a fresh breeze and a dry pitch this was never going to be a classic as both teams still need points to stay up and both teams made a rather hesitant start to the game .
Leighton had the first attack and in the 8th minute a Colney defender sliced a low cross over his own bar to earn Town a corner. This was immediately followed by a second corner which ended with Lorrell Smith putting an overhead kick wide of the goal.
Colney had a chance after 13 minutes but this posed no great threat to the Town goal.
Play had no real flow to it but Town looked comfortable in possession and enjoyed territorial advantage.
In the 27th minute Town produced some good football in a flowing move but Smith was given offside. With minutes to go to half time Town lost defender Alex Condon to what appeared to be an ankle injury, Lewis Sheridan replaced him in a straight swap.
Town had a scare when in a Colney attack the ball bouced on the top of the bar following a deflection. With the half time whistle due Town took the lead with a superb solo effort from James Towell.
The town full back cut inside onto his weaker left foot but then fired a superb shot into the top corner for his first goal of the season.
The second half saw town playing down the slope but against the wind but neither side managed to play any flowing football altyhough Dom Marsala fired a free kick just wide from outside the penalty area.
Towell encouraged by his first half effort then tried for a second after cutting inside but his effort was wide of the near post.
Just before the end Colney created a chance but this went high over the bar and town were able to see the game out without undue difficulty.
Town won their third successive game something they have been unable to do for several seasons and now have 40 points but although their League position is looking better they are still not mathematically safe, but if they keep playing with the same confidence things are looking much brighter.
Despite losing Alex Condon this was also Town‘s third clean sheet and Scott Reynolds and Adam Kirkup are now smiling at long last.
Towns Next Game is at home to Sun Sports on Saturday 1st April. Town are also holding a Race Night afterwards please come and support the Club’s money raising efforts.
