Leighton Town 3 - Oxhey Jets 1

After disappointing results to Tring and Sun Sports, Leighton needed to be more clinical against Oxhey Jets and they did so at home to the Hertfordshire side.

Town started with pace and the early signs were good as Lorrel Smith had an early strike blocked.

Oxhey Jets also had a couple of good efforts early on as a Jack Robertson free header went just past the far post and then Jack Sillitoe did well to get down low and parry Daniel Blackmans low strike.

However, it was Leighton who went 1-0 up on the 14th minute. Lorrel Smith made a lovely cross from the far side and Ben Gallant was in space to hit it first time past Will Barker in the Oxhey goal.

It was a deserved goal as Leighton had been on the front foot and perhaps had cause to have a penalty not long after as Vinny Greco looked to have been tripped in the box.

Greco made a neat run for Town but as he shaped to shoot he mishit it. Leighton were making some good chances now and as Greco took a corner for the Reds, Connor McMillan had a free header that wasn’t too far away.

Smith was extremely unlucky not to make it 2-0 to Leighton with some fantastic movement to get himself into a shooting position, he did everything right but over hit his effort just over the bar.

Town doubled their lead on the 35th minute through Dom Marsala with a neat finish on the far side as he drilled one into the bottom corner and the keeper couldn’t get anywhere near it.

So far, so good for Leighton who had dominated the half, and were still creating good chances; Marsala hit a lovely cross for Smith but he slipped as he shaped to shoot.

Despite this, Oxhey Jets got one back on the stroke of half time. The Leighton defence switched off and Simeon Armstrong rounded Sillitoe and finished into an empty net.

This gave The Jets a bit of hope coming into the second half; Hateley Mercer had to be alert to tackle Armstrong as he was rushing on towards goal looking to shoot.

Armstrong was at the heart of most of The Jets’ chances and as a corner came in his header wasn’t far over the bar.

Smith was at the heart of most of the Leighton attacks, and was unlucky not to have had a goal yet, he was bearing in on goal but Barker got out quickly to deny him.

Leighton were looking for a third goal to kill the game off and it looked only a matter of time before they got it, as Smith played in Marsala his shot was deflected for a Town corner.

However in the 88th minute Smith finally got the goal he deserved with some lovely football from Leighton. Marsala made a neat pass to McBride he made a incisive cross to Gallant his shot was blocked and Smith was there to smash it home into the roof of the net.

Leighton did well to see the game out and got the deserved three points in the end. It was a good team performance both defensively and offensively and moves Town up to 18th in the league. If Leighton play like this week in week out, they’ll continue to move up the table everything seemed to gel today.

Wembley travel to Bell Close on Tuesday before we travel to Holmer Green next Saturday.
