Town start new year with 3 points

In what has been a very disappointing season so far for Leighton but in the first game of the New Year Town showed that brighter times may be round the corner if they can consistently display the qualities that brought them victory against a decent Biggleswade team. With a couple of suspensions Town had to bring in new signings but they all looked comfortable and gave a hard working, disciplined display that deservedly won them all 3 points despite a late penalty scare.

Kicking up the slope in the first half Town competed well but Jack Sillitoe had to make a fine save to keep the scores level after only five minutes. Town replied but after a free kick on their right flank Louis Norton put his effort well over the bar, in the 12 th minute following a free kick to the home side Sillitoe made an instinctive save to keep out a fierce header from Russell.

Town's next effort came from a free kick 30 yards out but Griggs effort was easily gathered by Wyant in the home goal. Play returned to the other end of the pitch and a Biggleswade effort went just wide of the Town goal. Town then won a free kick but new signing Taylor Collins put his shot straight to the keeper. Town then produced a good move which took the ball from penalty area to penalty area but Louis Norton was again off target with his shot. With 3 minutes to go to the break Martin Griggs received the ball from a throw in and his spectacular volley from about 30 yards flew into the net leaving Wyant with no chance.

Much of the play at the start of the second half was in midfield but Leighton had more possession and looked lively on the break, unfortunately they could not secure the second goal to increase the gap, despite having several half chances.

In the 82nd minute Biggleswade were awarded a very dubious penalty after the referee decided that Jack Copson had fouled an attacker after winning the ball. After a long delay while the Referee and his assistant conferred the penalty was taken by Russell but he smashed it against the bar and the ball rebounded to safety with Leighton fans and players both believing justice had been done. Town were able to play out the game for a well earned win.

If Leighton can maintain this type of performance they have a good chance of getting away from the foot of the table , but it certainly wont be easy as this season has already shown us.
