Cockfosters 4 - Leighton 0

Although the final score makes it look as if this was an easy win for the hosts that is not a true reflection of the game and two late goals from Cockfosters as Town kept trying to get back in the game give a false picture of the match.

In recent games Leighton have been guilty of conceding soft goals early on but in this match they defended sensibly for at least the first 18 minutes and made the hosts work hard for their chances. Having said that the hosts then took the lead following a corner on their left flank . When the ball was played into the box Leighton left a player totally unmarked and he headed firmly into the Town net to undo all the hard work Town had put in early on.

Cockfosters created 2 really good chances soon after the goal but to Town's relief they were unable to convert either and Town showed plenty of fight. Town created a couple of chances of their own, in the 39th minute following a poor clearance by the home keeper Vinny Greco put his shot inches over the bar and then when the keeper fumbled a shot by Lorell Smith he needed one of his defenders to hack the ball away to safety.

Town started the second half in determined fashion but when it looked as if they were playing their way back into the game they conceded a second goal due to a defensive error in the 66th minute.

Cockfosters attacked down their right wing and when the ball was crossed Jack Sillitoe could only punch the ball as far as an opponent who played it quickly to a colleague who slid it into the goal. Three minutes after the goal a good Leighton move saw Lewis McBride burst into the penalty area before he was pushed from behind for an obvious penalty. The two match officials involved however did not think so and Town and their fans were left very frustrated at their decision.

Town continued to do most of the attacking and after a darting run from Jordan Davis he fired his shot just over the bar. Town's slim hopes of getting anything from the game disappeared in the space of a minute when the hosts scored two goals as Town left themselves short of defenders as they tried to reduce the deficit.

There were some encouraging signs for Town but defensive errors are still a problem and need addressing sooner rather than later.

Leighton Town FC would like to wish all their fans a Happy Christmas and New Year and thank them for their support despite indifferent performances so far this season.
