Oxhey Jets 5 - Leighton Town 3

Following the departure of Manager, Paul Burges in midweek, Leighton fans were hoping for a change in fortune but Sean Downey who is working as Caretaker Manager saw his team concede 4 goals to defensive errors and despite a late fightback that narrowed the scores it did nothing to hide the real differences that existed between the two sides for much of this game.

With several players still unavailable Mario Santos Costa returned as the right sided wing back. Before the game both teams and the match officials laid wreaths in memory of former Oxhey player Thomas Lake who was tragically killed in action in Afghanistan.
Town launched an attack direct from the kick off but the hosts dealt with it comfortably and they broke quickly to win a corner on their left flank. When the ball was crossed a static Town defence allowed Oxhey captain, Armstrong a free header to score from about 5 yards out, the ball passing through Jack Sillitoe's legs, although it might have taken a deflection on the way in.

Town equalised after 9 minutes when Griggs receiverd a good pass from Marcus Campbell and he turned his marker neatly before firing home with his right foot. Town never had chance to settle before they conceded again when poor defending allowed an Oxhey player a clear run into the box where he was tripped by Jack Sillitoe. The referee awarded an obvious penalty and Armstrong scored his second sending the Town keeper the wrong way as he calmly stroked the ball into the net.

Towns next attempt came from Griggs who turned sharply and shot just wide of the far post. In the 20th minute the hosts attacked down their left flank and a low driven cross struck Alex Condon and rolled into the corner of the net to put the hosts 2 goals clear. Things did not get any better for Leighton when Alec Condon had to stay off after a late challenge left him with a knee injury, he was replaced by Aaron McKee. In In the dying seconds of the half Oxhey scored their fourth when Armstrong struck a superb left footed volley into the net to complete his hat trick. Most spectators had decided by this time that the game was over as a serious contest.

Town nearly pulled a goal back in the 57th minute when Griggs fierce effort produced a fine save from home keeper Nugent but Town's shots on target were few and far between. Town then allowed Hariely to cut inside on to his left foot but his low effort produced a good save from Sillitoe at the foot of the post.

In the 64th minute the hosts won a corner on their right and Sillitoe's weak punched clearance dropped well for an Oxhey player who prodded it towards goal where Lowton scored easily from very close range.

In the 68th minute Town pulled one back when Craig Maisiri fired a free kick at goal which the keeper could only palm away and Mario Santos Costa drove home the loose ball to reduce the deficit.

A minute after Town's second goal they scored another after an excellent right wing run and cross by Lewis McBride was met in the six yard box by Aaron McKee who turned the ball into the net.

The two goals produced a sense of urgency in the Town team that had been sadly lacking in several players before the goals, but despite playing with a renewed energy Town could not pull back the two goal difference and on the balance of play the hosts were deserved winners.

If any Town players think that Sean Downey will accept this type of performance they are in for a shock and most of us are expecting a much improved performance on Tuesday night when Town entertain Hoddesdon Town
