Aylesbury FC 1 --- 1 Leighton Town
Town made the short trip to Buckinghamshire to play Aylesbury FC on Saturday, with both sides earning creditable draws in midweek, the hosts against Royston and Leighton against Biggleswade most of the spectators would have been hoping for an entertaining game, however, neither side looked that menacing in attack and it was no surprise that both teams required a penalty to score their goals after wasting some guilt edged chances. Town selected the same starting line up that began in midweek at Biggleswade and in the very first minute launched an attack that fizzled out when the ball was crossed behind.
Aylesbury broke quickly in the 6th minute but when the ball was crossed it travelled beyond the far post the ball and Town cleared without too many problems. In the next Aylesbury attack Haydn Dodge in the Town goal had to make a good save low down to his right. Leighton were the next to look dangerous but Leon Simpson put his shot wide of the target from about 8yards with all the Town fans waiting to celebrate the opening goal. The host replied when town were caught out by a quick break down the right but when the ball was crossed O’Sullivan headed over the bar from a good position. In Leighton ‘s next attack Lewis McBride turned inside onto his left foot but his well struck shot drew a decent save low down from Roberts in the home goal. There followed a spell where both teams gave away possession too easily and the game slowed in very hot conditions. In the 34th minute Aaron Morgan fired in a fierce free kick but Roberts made a good save and tipped the ball over the bar at full stretch. Haydn Dodge then had to make an important save after an Aylesbury free kick and two minutes later the keeper made an easy save after Aylesbury were gifted a free header following a corner kick. Immediately after this the hosts had a great chance after a through ball caught the Town defence square and allowed Blake a great chance which he wasted by blazing over the bar from 12 yards. In the 2nd mi nut of first half injury time Leighton were awarded a penalty kick for handball after a high free kick into the box. Leon Simpson stepped forward to take the kick which he fired high into the left hand side with the keeper going the wrong way.
Leighton started the second half on the attack and Aaron Morgan shot just over the bar from a direct free kick. Leighton had a wonderful chance to score a second in the 48th minute when some good football between McBride, Morgan and Simpson saw the latter try to take the ball round the keeper but he never moved the ball quickly enough which allowed the keeper to snatch the ball at his feet and a real chance to finish off the opposition was lost. Town kept up the pressure and Morgan fired another shot over the bar. Two minutes later Adie Chaves tried his luck from 35 yards but his powerful shot lacked direction and flew wide of the right hand post. Town introduced all three subs in an effort to find a second goal but it was Aylesbury who scored next. In the 84th minute a Leighton attack was foiled when Alex Bradley’s pull back was easily collected by Roberts and the home side broke quickly down their left flank, the ball was played inside where an Aylesbury attacker stepped neatly between two Town defenders and he was tripped as he ran forward to give the home side an obvious penalty. Daniel Jones converted the spot kick with ease.
Leighton again produced some decent approach play but two wasted chances and some sub standard defending cost them a first ever League win over the home side.
Town go to Nottinghamshire next week in the FA Trophy to play Rainworth Miners Welfare and they will certainly need to show more flair in attack if they are to have any chance of winning the tie.
