Leighton Town 0 - 0 Beaconsfield SYCOB
After a run of three losses and ten goals conceded Leighton entertained third placed Beaconsfield at Bell Close on Saturday and gave a hard working all round team performance. On the day Town did most of the attacking against experienced opponents but could not convert any of the chances they created into goals as the visitors were kept on the back foot.
Town were without the injured again Ben Gallant but were able to welcome Sam Chapman back into the side at centre back with Charlie Cunningham moving forward to play the holding midfield role. Jake Bewley returned at left back with Jack Copson dropping to the bench.
In front of a disappointing crowd of just 91, Town started brightly and in the opening minutes a Jake Bewley cross was only just touched by the visitors keeper and Lewis McBride at full stretch could not get enough power on his headed effort and the keeper was able to pick up the ball . A couple of minutes after this in another Leighton attack Leon Simpson put his right footed shot past the far post from close range. Leighton maintained the pace and in the 12th minute a dangerous cross had to be headed behind by Yiadom Yeboah to clear the danger.
Beaconsfield broke quickly on a couple of occasions but their final ball let them down and on another occasion Leighton had a bit of luck when Sam Chapman looked like he had pulled an attacker back just outside the area but the officials did not give the visitors the free kick they expected.
Leighton kept up the tempo and in the 35th minute Layne Eadie tried a right footed shot but it did not carry enough power to trouble the goalkeeper. Just before the break Leon Simpson cleverly laid the ball off to Sean Bishop and the Town midfielder fired his low shot close to the far post.
Town maintained the tempo after the break and Lewis Mcbride fired in a left footed effort that required a good save from Power-Simpson. Five minutes later Sam Chapman went very close to opening the scoring when his headed effort went right across the goal before being headed off the line. Beaconsfield had a great chance in the 65th minute when a corner on the Town left was knocked to the back post but Charlie Mpi headed over the angle from a good position. Town still had lots of possession but could not create any decent chances and the game ended in a stalemate.
Manager Craig Wells must have been reasonably happy with his team’s performance after what had been a bad week for Town. His side showed plenty of spirit and it was only the lack of a cutting edge that denied them all three points from a game against top three opponents and he will be hoping that Ben Gallant and Enzo Silvestri will be fit for Tuesday’s game at Dunstable in the Beds Senior Cup Semi Final. After that Town face a very difficult League game at North Greenford on Saturday as the home side are on a run of decent results at the present time.
