Leighton’s recent mini revival continued on Saturday at Bell Close when they extended their unbeaten run to four matches

LEIGHTON TOWN 1 - 0 DAVENTRY TOWN
Leighton’s recent mini revival continued on Saturday at Bell Close when they extended their unbeaten run to four matches as a single goal from Enzo Silvestri ensured that they took all three points from an exciting game. Leighton were easier winners than the score suggests but Daventry did apply some pressure in the last 15 minutes and with a little luck might have earned a point which would have been an unfair reflection over the 90 minutes of the game.
After the win over Biggleswade earlier in the week, manager Craig Wells selected the same team to start this match. After a quiet opening Town created the first chance of the game when from a throw in Enzo Silvestri headed the ball forward but Leon Simpson’s shot lacked the power to trouble the keeper. Daventry responded with an attack down their right flank and the ball was crossed low and went right across the face of the goal before Andre Maltay cleared the danger. Five minutes later Jake Bewley crossed the ball in from the left and Ross Hanley showed some good skills but the ball did not drop quickly enough and his eventual shot lacked any real power. After some good approach work by Lewis McBride, Leon Simpson’s shot was deflected wide of the goal. Daventry then replied and Lee took the ball off Andre Maltay before firing a fierce shot into the side netting. Town pushed forward again and Enzo Silvestri had his first shot blocked before putting his second just wide of the post. In the 38th minute when Jake Bewley fired an inswinging cross towards the far post and Enzo Silvestri out jumped his marker to head the ball into the net to give Town the lead. In the 44th minute Daventry were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Leighton penalty area after a foul by Jack Copson but Mark Bellingham put the free kick over the bar. The visitors also had a chance in the last minute of the half when Copson’s header went across the goal and Jason Lee’s fiercely struck shot was well blocked by Kevin Marsh to preserve Leighton’s lead.
Leighton started the second half on the front foot and in an early attack Leon Simpson’s volleyed shot flew wide of the far post. Jake Bewley then shot just over after a clever pass by Enzo Silvestri. In the 64th minute Leighton broke quickly down the left wing and Jake Bewley drove in a waist high cross but Ross Hanley’s diving header flew wide of the far post just as Town fans were getting ready to celebrate a second goal. In the 65th minute Ben Gallant was introduced in place of Jake Bewley and a few minutes later a Ross Hanley shot was blocked after a good well constructed Leighton attack. Lewis McBride then ran at three Daventry defenders and appeared to be tripped but the match officials allowed play to continue to Town’s obvious disappointment. Two minutes later Ben Gallant showed some good skills down the left but his cross was just behind Enzo Silvestri who did very well to get his header anywhere near the target. Daventry seemed to sense that the game was slipping away from them and having introduced all three permitted subs at the same time they tried some route one football to save the game. They were awarded a free kick just outside the area in the 83rd minute but this was driven over the bar and in the 88th minute they were unlucky when a shot hit both posts before town were able to clear the danger. In the 94th minute a Daventry header also bounced off the top of the bar before going behind but Kevin marsh appeared to have it covered.
Town held on for the win which they deserved for a good all round display with Shane Hill and Ross Hanley running the show in midfield. Enzo Silvestri kept up his sequence of scoring important goals. The Town defence looked solid for most of the game and Town are now 6th from the bottom and much closer to the clubs in the group above them after their recent run of results.
Craig Wells will have been pleased with his team after this result against a Daventry side who are much better than their League position suggests and he will be hoping for another display like this next week when Town travel to Rugby.
