Bedfont Town 2 - 1 Leighton Town
New Leighton Manager, Craig Wells must be wondering what his side have to do to win games after they dominated this game against fellow strugglers Bedfont but still ended up losing the game. At the end of the day their failure to score from the penalty spot cost them a point but Bedfont have now closed the gap between the two sides and Town are deep in trouble at the bottom of the table and need to start winning on a consistent basis if they wish to climb the table.
Town made several changes for this game, Shane Hill started in midfield along with Charlie Cunningham, Enzo Silvestri and Deji Ojuroye could only make the subs bench.
Town started brightly and in the first minute Charlie Cunningham headed against the bar. Town were passing the ball around well in the early stages and in the 7th minute Shane Hill struck a long range shot but the keeper was well positioned to make a comfortable save. Four minutes later Jake Bewley created space to fire in a low left footed shot but the keeper was able to dive to his right to make the save. Despite dominating the early play Leighton went behind after 19 minutes when the ball was fired in from the right and Stanislaus was left unmarked to knock the ball past Lee Clark. Town were then forced to make an enforced change when skipper Sam Chapman had to leave the field with an ankle injury. Dan Chambers came on as his replacement with Jake Bewley moving back into the full back slot. Five minutes after the change Leighton drew level with a headed goal from Stuart Deaton. Town won a corner after Dan Chambers had a shot turned over and when Lewis McBride’s corner was knocked to the far post Deaton was on hand to head it home. On the balance of play this was no less than Town deserved and they continued to look the better team without creating any good chances.
The second half started off badly for Leighton when they conceded a penalty after just 5 minutes. The spot kick was well taken to put the hosts back in front and they could now afford to sit back and soak up the Leighton pressure as Town looked for a second equaliser. Town had a wonderful opportunity to draw level when Ben Gallant was fouled in the area after 65minutes and Town were awarded a penalty kick. Ben Gallant stepped up to take the kick but the keeper guessed right and saved the spot kick when he dived low to his left to save the strikers effort. Despite lots of possession and territorial dominance Town could not fashion any genuine goal scoring opportunities and the hosts were able to defend deep and frustrate Town’s attempt to at least get a draw from a game they should have won. This was a good display from Leighton but once again they could not create enough chances to win the game in which they had looked the better organised side. Bedfont were complimentary about Town’s performance on the day but Craig Wells would have settled for a lucky win as he attempts to lift Town from the dreaded drop zone. Town now face a tough fixture against Uxbridge at Bell Close next Saturday.
