However, this weekend Town got their own back in the FA Trophy as decisive goals from a returning face made all the difference in St Ives.
Leighton started brightly, finding a lot of the ball in the first 15. However, the closest they’d come would be a low shot across flying through an onrushing Jake Watkinson’s legs. Momentum could’ve suffered as play stopped for a Ben Farrell knock, yet Town were undeterred and found the net before the break.
In the half’s first minute of added time, Finlay Brennan floated in a pinpoint cross from the left. This time Watkinson latched on and headed home excellently. The other side of half time, Watkinson nearly had a quick second yet his header only glanced wide right following top link up play on 52’.
Up the other end Town had to keep concentrated, and the hosts’ threat was epitomised as Brad Rolt tested Xavi Comas on the hour. His low shot forced an excellent stop from the Spaniard as Leighton held on to their lead.
Around ten minutes later, Leighton won a penalty as a bundling Cambridge defence seemingly switched off. Jake Watkinson stepped up and found the bottom right smoothly to cap off a top display. Now, in the next match up in the Trophy, Town are set to face Boldmere St Michaels away in the Third Round of Qualifying.
