In preseason game number four, Leighton Town lost out to visiting Biggleswade United.

205 spectators ignored the drizzle for this one, as a great Louie Barrett chip was a standout in a relatively drab Leighton outing.

The visitors came flying out the blocks and took the lead 16 minutes in. Biggleswade’s number 11 was the scorer, pouncing on a defensive error as Town sat with too much time on the ball.

Gary Flinn’s men looked to respond quickly and within ten minutes of the goal, Albie Hall had his header cleared painstakingly off the line. It followed a nicely lofted ball from Jim Burnside on the right and was a glimmer of hope in what had been a pretty cagey opening spell.
This chance seemed to have pointed the men in red and white in the right direction, and on 34 minutes, Louie Barrett got the equaliser. Albie Hall slid a brilliant pass in behind after top hold up play – and the pacey Barrett darted in and dinked the onrushing Ollie Leslie coolly.

After half time, the game re-entered a scrappy spell – yet a nicely worked Biggleswade corner routine was a burst from mediocrity. From the right, the ball was driven low and at the near post, number five prodded past Xavi Comas to restore the lead on 57’.

20 minutes before the end, things would go from bad to worse for Leighton as Biggleswade extended the deficit. The ball bounced around the box and United’s striker managed to slot home into the bottom right corner.

Now, with this one in the books, an ever-developing Leighton Town now look to Tuesday night’s visit of MK Irish to Bell Close.
