Leighton Town 2 – 0 Flackwell Heath

In what was Lee Bircham’s first game in charge at Bell Close, Leighton Town prevailed against table rivals Flackwell Heath with two goals from new front man Duncan Culley.
The first half was epitomised by half chances amidst a tight battle. On 30 minutes, Town could only head tamely toward goal from a free kick. On 35, George Kerr was positive but just flashed over from the edge of the box.
The second period got under way in front of the 355 spectators, with many probably hoping for a better showing from both sides. Shortly into the new half, the fans were treated to a sublime bit of skill. In the midweek, Duncan Culley said in an interview his playing style was similar to that of Didier Drogba and his first goal for the club would’ve had even the Ivorian legend smiling.
The ball came in from the left and the forward pounced, his first chested touch bouncing up inside the box. The instincts kicked in and the Welshman pulled out some immaculate acrobatics to bicycle kick the ball back across goal, clipping the left up-right on its way in. What a way to introduce yourself to the Leighton faithful.
With Town in the ascendency now, Culley would be causing more trouble for Flackwell and on 81 minutes the ball was in the net again. However, it would be relief for the visitors as the offside flag was up.
That relief wouldn’t last long though as Culley was determined to add to his tally. Just three minutes later, he would. The number nine was through on goal and drilled his effort low into the bottom left corner. With arms wide, he absorbed the Bell Close atmosphere. It really was a statement performance from the new striker.
With the Reds on top, Flackwell looked out on their feet and before the final whistle, gave away a lazy penalty. Ashton Campbell stepped up but Isaac Hay was equal to it with a smart dive to his right. Even better was the follow up, flying across to deny Campbell’s meagre headed rebound.
The game ended and Leighton continue in fourth. Flackwell sit just six points behind in fifth. Their next fixture is a visit of Tring to Wilks Park. Leighton on the other hand look to continue momentum under the new manager against Leverstock Green at Bell Close on Tuesday.
