MATCH REPORT London Colney 0 – 2 Leighton Town

Saturday’s trip to Hertfordshire resulted in Leighton Town picking up the three points on the road - as goals from Ashton Campbell and Joe Fitzgerald were enough to beat London Colney.
The travelling Reds were under the guidance of caretaker managers James Heeps and Enzo Silvestri following Paul Bonham’s resignation. Despite a transitional time for the club, they started excellently against their 17th place opposition.
It only took two minutes to break the deadlock – through a tried and tested method. A long ball over the top found Ashton Campbell and he had the composure to finish calmly into the bottom corner.
Leighton seemed confident from the outset, but the next real chance came on 18 minutes. A free kick from the right was hit low and the bouncing ball found Bill Morgan. He swung a leg and just sliced the ball left of the goal.
It was close but it would be a good sign, as the visitors kept banging on the door. That door would be blown off the hinges as Town emphatically doubled their lead.
Joe Fitzgerald was the man to do it on 28 minutes, hitting a rasping effort so hard it actually broke the London Colney net. It was some way to mark his first goal of the season.
Before the half was out, Leighton looked likely to notch a third and even won a penalty. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be – Abuzar Khan was unable to convert from the spot.
The second half started slower than the first and as the club twitter bluntly put it on 67’ – nothing had happened since getting under way.
Ashton Campbell changed that with a big moment in the 72nd minute. Through on goal, the striker looked to bag his second of the afternoon but was stopped by a smart save from the home goalkeeper.
The game wound down and Leighton had little more to do apart from clear a London Colney free kick in the 78th minute. It seemed a professional display as Town got the points and a valuable clean sheet.
Leighton Town face Biggleswade FC in the semi-final of the Beds Senior Cup on Tuesday night at Bell Close KO 7:45.
